Kick The Ladder is a filmmaking game where players create and premiere one minute short films within a week of rolling three dice. It's a great way to practice film, enjoy film as a hobby, and have an actual audience for your film.

The KTL Dice consist of one six-sided die (D6), one ten-sided die (D10), and one twenty-sided die (D20). The first two dice combine to make one prompt (e.g. "exactly four locations"), while the third creates another prompt (e.g. "all shots must be handheld"). Roll the three KTL dice, note your rule code, make a one-minute film that follows the prompts within one week, then submit and premiere it. Check the How To Play page for a full walkthrough.

It's the random prompts mixed within the structured 1-week / 1-minute constraints that completes the recipe for a KTL Film. Roll the dice and you'll get a unique combination every time.

We believe film can be accessible and feasible as a hobby and this is a great way to practice. You'd be surprised at what you can accomplish in a week, and where your intuition might take you when you don't have enough time to second-guess yourself.

You can do a LOT in a minute, and there are thousands of KTL Films to prove it. Practicing film in an approachable and digestible time restriction makes you that much better when you don't have it.

Not at all. We've had over 130 people make and premiere their first-ever film as a KTL Film. This is for everyone, whether you've never touched a camera or you're an industry veteran.

You can submit your KTL Film from the cloud icon in the upper right-hand side of the main menu. It'll ask you for a YouTube link, the KTL rule code, and the zip code the film was made in — and that's it.

Yes! As long as "allow embedding on other sites" is checked, you can have an unlisted YouTube video viewable on this site.

Totally understandable — part of playing Kick The Ladder is exploring film as an art form for self-expression. Sometimes things are too vulnerable to share with the world. If you want to use the site to keep track of your score/milestones or still give your cast/crew their milestones, you can upload on YouTube (unlisted/allow embed), import it here, and set it to Private. Nobody without the password can see it, but it still counts toward milestones and credits.

You can make changes to your KTL Film — including adding a description, additional filming locations, and crediting your cast/crew — from the User Dashboard (found under your profile picture in the top right of the main menu).

Go to your account icon in the top right and click Dashboard. Make sure you're on the Dashboard tab, then scroll to Account at the bottom — it has a dropdown with photo options.

Our posting system automatically grabs your thumbnail from YouTube, so make sure you're happy with it there before submitting here. Tip: while busy thumbnails with lots of text might work well on YouTube, on our site they can get noisy fast. You can always change your YouTube thumbnail back after submitting.

Once you publish your first KTL film, you'll be moved from Audience to Filmmaker — and then commenting on films will be unlocked.
